A while back I did a post on Common Eye Make Up Mistakes, where I briefly touched upon the topic of applying mascara correctly. This step in applying eye makeup is so crucial, that I’m dedicating an entire blog post to it. I’ve seen way too many people get this step wrong and I’m hoping to set the record straight on mascara once and for all! Keep reading for 5 tips to apply mascara correctly!
I’m a firm believer that make up should enhance one’s natural beauty. I see many women apply make up for what it seems to be for the sake of doing so, but it doesn’t do much by the way of enhancing their features. Your eye make up is nothing without mascara applied correctly. You can do some nice eye shadow and even apply eyeliner, but if your mascara isn’t applied correctly, nothing will matter.
Mascara if done correctly, is the only step you need in your eye make up routine to really enhance your eyes. Some faux pas I see all too often are, thick eyeliner and barely there lashes or eye shadow all over the lid, with mascara applied to pin straight lashes.
So without further ado, here are 5 tips to apply mascara correctly.
1) Always Curl Your Lashes
A pet peeve of mine is seeing mascara applied to pin straight lashes. Unless you have naturally curled lashes, USE AN EYELASH CURLER. When you curl your lashes, it gives your eyes a more lifted and bright eyed look. When curling your lashes, try to get as close to the base of your eyelash as possible so that you are curling from the base. Hold the eye lash curler down tight and count to 5-10 seconds. If you don’t see much of a difference, repeat the first step. After you’ve curled the base, take the eyelash curler and position it midway between the base and the tip of your eyelash. Again, hold down tight and count 5-10 seconds. If necessary, repeat step 2. The end result should be beautifully curled eyelashes. I’ve noticed that over time, my eyelashes have been trained to curl. When I first started curling them, it would take forever to curl, but now they curl so quickly, has anyone else noticed that or is it just me? (Or maybe I’ve become more proficient at curling them?)
2) Get The Right Eyelash Curler For You
I love Revlon’s Eyelash curler. They have a few different kinds and recently came out with a fancy gold one that’s more expensive than their regular one and I hated it. I found the grasp on it weird and the part where you put your eyelashes through ill fitting. Not all eyelash curlers are built the same and it may take some time finding the one that works best for you. Lastly, don’t forget to replace the curling pad or the lash curler entirely once it wears out, as the curler can become ineffective over time.
3) Apply Mascara Liberally
I find that a lot of people are afraid of getting that chunky mascara look and as a result, they tend to apply just one coat. So eventhough they put on mascara, it’s not visible, and really, honestly, then what’s the point? Very rarely will one coat to the trick. I usually apply 3 coats. The first coat is to “prep and prime” my eyelashes, the second is to add volume and the third is to give length. Sometimes I’ll do a fourth coat, more on that below.
4) How To Apply Mascara
First of all, make sure that when you’re dipping your wand into your mascara, you are getting enough of the mascara on your wand. When applying, always begin with applying it from the base of your eyelash. I like to start from the base and use a very subtle squiggly motion and work upwards. You’ll have to work along your eyelash line, so I recommend working from the inner corner and going outwards. To get the outercorner of my lashes, I use the tip of the mascara wand. For your second coat, simply redo what you did in the first step, this will help give you more volume. For the last coat, I like to focus on the tip of my eyelashes. Visualize your eyelash in quarters and apply your third coat to the last quarter (towards the tip of your eyelashes not the base) to give you more length.
Don’t forget to apply a light coat to the bottom lashes as well!
5) Find The Right Mascara For You
Not all mascaras are made the same and not one mascara works for everyone. I have friends who swear by Lancôme and others who swear by Too Faced’s Better Than Sex Mascara. Personally for me, nothing beats drug store brand mascaras, particulary Maybelline. I’ve been using Maybelline mascaras since I was 16 and even after trying other brands, always come back to this brand (not sponsored). I love Maybelline’s Volum’ Express Mascara. Depending on if I have time and if I want to make a bigger impact, I’ll top off my three coats with Maybelline’s Lash Sensational Luscious Mascara. I’ve also used MAC’s Zoom Lash, but given that mascara tends to dry out, Maybelline’s Sensational Luscious Mascara is a way better price point. Do try out different mascaras until you find the one that works for you.
